One of the limits of the Alternate Rewards system was a rather arbitrary ummm duration limit on boon, blessing or grand master training. It rather annoyed me in that it lacked any correlation to the items it was intending to be a quasi replacement for... and that the suggested number of these are well trifling with no convincing reason...

Fixing this lead me to an idea Called Karma Points aka the coin of Charity and oath bound gifts and martial arts requiring regimen.

Karma points become the alternate reward metric and in a game where the flavor of heros dripping with bling just doesnt feel right in particular when loot is decentralized from the story (know your group)  and ought to be combined with Inherent bonuses rules.

Karma Points can be allotted to heros in a quantity directly associated with the gold cost one might gain in magic items. In fact Karma points can also be gained by contributing wealth anonymously to charity... for instance one might turn over the Dragons treasure to the villages who were plundered to created it.

A magic item can be stolen or lost or converted to cash (although perhaps only the latter is very likely) ...so we need to enable boons, blessing and training to have at-least some method of being put down/loss/transformation

To this end I introduce Oaths/Taboos and  for those of martial inclination also Regimen or Kata. Generally speaking one can drop a regimen, or break an oath/taboo allowing the associated boon, blessing or training to fade (karma points will fade back in to pool). One might be tricked out of an Oath as a story line for a change in character. Or one can recover a broken oath.

Like Magic Items these oath bound gifts aka GEASA can be created by suitably trained individuals this ability is called being an Oath Binder. Oath Binding is learned as Ritual or as Martial Practice directly paralleling the Create Item ritual

Karma Points are the coinage primarily spent to gain these items to that end those performing the rituals require tests, a trial of humility and a test of worthiness. The former often involves menial labor often for a third party. The labor itself may not end up as menial as it first appears and generally the forces of fate work to make it so. The test of worthiness is sometimes an actual smokescreen for an extension of the trial of humility. These are used to fill out the Karma cost of the art or gift to be gained

Karma Points may sometimes be spent to gain short term benefits in a manner similar to expendable magic items.

I have probably presented some of this before but I want to enhance presentation and clarity

Born To Be Kings and Heros -- From the Ashes Phoenix
“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.” - Lazarus Long via Robert Heinlein.

One suspects Lugh Long-hand Samildánach (a wright/carpenter, a sailor, a smith/bronze craftsman, a healer, a champion, a harpist, a poet/historian, a sorcerer, cupbearer) would agree.
